THURSDAY, DECEMBER 25, 1975
Well, it's good to
be writing a diary again this year. At 7:00 A.M. today, we opened our
stockings. I got this diary, the pen I'm writing with, candy and a yo-yo. At
7:10 A.M., we got to open our presents under the tree. I got a pair of
slipper-socks, "Life" game, clothes, math flash cards, a word-search
book and get this : the record "Convoy" by C.W. McCall and a
Pancho Gonzales TENNIS SET! Complete with Impact 120 racket, 3 balls and a
racket cover! All made by Spalding. Grandma and Grandpa are staying overnight!
Mickey and Mike came over and gave me the "Guinness Game of World
Records". More tomorrow...
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1975
I got up at 9:10 A.M. today, went downstairs and watched
T.V. We got quite a bit of snow last night. I forgot only one present I got
yesterday: a bookmark that I got in my stocking. Guess what? Mickey and Mike
get to come over Monday to go to the hills across from the high school! We had
a big breakfast. Larry called and wanted to know if we could see each others'
presents today but we'll have to wait for tomorrow. We ate stuffed cabbage and
watched some good T.V. shows. It was a good day.
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1975
I got up at 9:10 A.M. today, went downstairs and watched
cartoons. Grandma and Grandpa had to leave today. Larry and I had to change our
plans because Larry had to go somewhere. We took down all our Christmas
decorations today. We had to vacuum so many needles that daddy was thinking
about getting an artificial tree next year. I went to the library and got some
books about tennis. I watched T.V. and just plain relaxed. It was a good day.
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1975
I got up at 8:30 A.M. today, went downstairs and got all
dressed up for church. We didn't have a brunch, but a lunch. We ate stuffed
cabbage. Since there wasn't much to do this afternoon, we decided to do Steve's
"Superstamps". They're big cardboard decoupage stamps that Stevie got
from Uncle Ronny on Christmas Day. It took us about two hours to finish them
and now they're nicely hung on the wall. We can't wait until tomorrow to go
sledding. It was a good day.
MONDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1975
I got up at 8:10 A.M. today, went downstairs and watched
T.V. At 11:10 A.M. we went to the hill without Mickey and Mike. The hill was
super-good sliding today. At about noon,
Mickey and Mike finally came. We went to the "bobsled run" and played
there. We all came home to eat dinner and drink hot chocolate. We played around
and just plain had fun. It was a good day.
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1975
I got up at 9:30 A.M. today, went downstairs and watched
T.V. We ate breakfast and played "Life". We went upstairs to play
around for a while. Pat came over to talk and we showed her our presents. We
ate dinner. We then got out the "Guinness Game of World
Records". The rules are hard to figure
out, but once you do it's SUPERFUN! Well, it was a good day.
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1975
I got up at 8:15 A.M. today, went downstairs and watched
T.V. We played around for a while with our games and toys. Mama and Daddy went
to Meijer's and bought new bedspreads for Stevie and me. Mama also got me a new
battery for my radio. We had to do our papers and we got a new record! We got
home at 4:37 P.M.! We got potatoburgers for dinner. We played with the
"Guinness" game trying to pass the time away. It got closer and
closer. First minutes, then seconds, then suddenly...
THURSDAY, JANUARY 1, 1976
...HAPPY NEW YEAR! We had Egg Nog mixed with vodka and
Cheese Doritos and nuts. I finally got to sleep and got back up at 8:45 A.M. We
watched the Rose Parade and had the rest of the potatoburgers for lunch. At
5:30 P.M., the Nagy's (my Godparents) called and at 6:30 P.M. came over. They
got me some late Christmas presents, too! I got a "Probe" game and 10
dollars! We had lots of fun! We played with our toys and ate brownies. It was a
good day.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 2, 1976
I got up at 9:15 A.M. today, went downstairs and watched
T.V. We ate our breakfast and we all
just sort of played around. At lunchtime we ate spaghetti and meatballs. At
around 3:00 P.M. Fran came over with Kimmie. It was fun while they were here.
We watched a lot of T.V. this second day of the year. We watched the lottery,
"Where the Lillies Bloom" and Part 3 of "The American
Assassins". This time it was about the Martin Luther King murder. It was a
good show and it was a good day.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 3, 1976
I got up at 9:10 A.M. today, went downstairs and watched
cartoons. Mama went to the store to shop around for all kinds of stuff. We ate
leftovers for lunch. We then went upstairs and played around in our bedroom. I
found a tennis tournament on T.V. and watched it to pick up a few pointers. The
Camarmies came over and we all had chicken paprikos. We watched the "Lou
Gordon" program. It was a good day.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 4, 1976
I got up at 8:30 A.M. today, went downstairs and got all
dressed up for church. After mass, we ate a light breakfast because we didn't
feel like eating very much today. Larry and the rest came over our house to see
our presents, but we couldn't go over there because Larry's dad had the flu. I
took a bath because I want to be clean for the play tryouts tomorrow at the
community center. They'll be at 7:30 P.M. The play's called "The Miracle
Worker". It's the true-life story of Helen Keller. Well, it was a good
day.
MONDAY, JANUARY 5, 1976
I got up at 6:30 A.M. today, went downstairs and watched
the "Today" show. School was good today and in sixth hour we had to
take Home Ec instead of shop. When I got home, I had some soup. Daddy dropped
me off at the community center to try out for a part in the play. It was a real
bummer. There was only one part I could try out for. There were five people
trying including John Arkenstein and the director's son (who just happens to be
the right size for the part). Well, I can kiss that part goodbye! Well
at least I got to see the last "American Assassins". It was a good day.
TUESDAY, JANUARY 6, 1976
I got up at 6:30 A.M. today, went downstairs and watched the
"Today" show. School was good today, but I sure wasn't. When I got
home, my stomach began to hurt. Also my head, leg muscles and eyes hurt. I felt
tired and dizzy. I slept quite a while and ate dinner. Later, I had some
peppermint tea and I feel much better now. Although I'm not fully well, I think
I'll be at school tomorrow. I hope I'm alright for papers tomorrow. It's a fair
day.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 1976
I got up at 7:00 A.M. but I didn't feel very good so I
stayed home from school. I went to bed until about 10:00 A.M. when I was
feeling a little better and went downstairs. I had some hot chocolate. For
lunch I had some sausage but couldn't finish it because it was too greasy. Our
paper route went horrible today. Everything that could go wrong did. We finally
got done at 7:00 P.M. Well, I hope I'm okay by tomorrow. It was a gross day.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 1976
I got up at 6:30 A.M. today, went downstairs and watched
the "Today" show. I felt good enough to go to school today, so I
went. I used my skip-slip so by absence wouldn't count against me. After
school, I bought some material for a gym bag we're going to make in Home Ec.
Chow-En-Lai died today. We had some steak and stuffing for dinner. Well, it was
a good day.

cartoons. Daddy had to work today. I finally got my copy of "Official
UFO" today. The next issue will come out in February. When I got home, I
ate lunch and watched W.O.G. (Way Out Games). It's good. Tomorrow is going to
be fun. In REP class, we're going to have a sledding-tobogganing party. It'll
be complete with hot dogs and hot chocolate. It'll be fun and I can't wait. It
was a good day.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 11, 1976
I got up at 8:15 A.M. today, went downstairs and got all
dressed up for church. Man, we had a super-blast at our REP sledding party! My
Flexible Flyer was one of the best sleds there! After I got home from the party
I got to go straight to Larry's. (Stevie went, too.) First, we did dome more
sledding and then went inside Larry's house. He had all kinds of things. We all
played around and I saw Larry's tennis racket. (We'll be taking lessons
together this summer.) Well, it was a great day.

to bed. It was a good day.

the "Today" show. School was good today. The big story was snow and lots
of it! Eight inches! Daddy is working until 10:00 P.M. tonight. I had some
pizza for dinner. I shoveled the sidewalk but it was no use. The snow piles up
faster than you can shovel it. Mama's class was cancelled. So was Stevie and
Vicky's REP classes. There's no school tomorrow! Well, it was a good day.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14, 1976
I got up at 8:00 A.M. today since there was no school.
Daddy came home last night and went back to work this morning. We ate breakfast
and just played around. Mama got me a pizza for lunch today. Today gave us an
opportunity to shovel the snow. Larry came over and we played outside and
inside. (In that order.) Our papers didn't come today, but they'll probably be
here tomorrow. (I hope not.) We watched TV. It was a good day today.

today, but it wasn't. A picture of the East Street Bridge from our back yard
was on the cover of a construction magazine! Man, it was a great
day!

went to our annual 4th of July picnic at the Horvath's. We didn't stay long. We
watched the fireworks at the High School. It was an HISTORIC day. (For more
details about today see the Memoranda section at the back of this diary.)
***MEMORANDA SECTION - JULY 4, 1976***
Today began like any other day - at midnight. At that
ungodly hour of the morning I was listening to WJR (Radio 76). I was hoping for
something special to happen at midnight, but when the news came on as usual, I
sleepily turned off my radio and went to sleep. I slept soundly for eight hours
until, at 8:30 A.M. Mama woke me up. She always wakes me up at 8:30 A.M. on
Sundays so I'll be able to get ready for church. As I was lying in bed I
thought things like "Is this it?" and "I was more excited about
the Bicentennial yesterday than I am today." One thing to be thankful for
was the weather. The weather the night before was thunder, rain and lightning.
Well, I then
went downstairs and ate a small breakfast. We then went into the Buick and
drove to church. Daddy stayed home with Paul. When we got to church, Stevie and
I took our usual perch in the choir loft. The American flag hung proudly from
the inside wall of the church and all the hymns were about America. We came
home and ate a light breakfast. On Sundays, we usually have a large brunch, but
today we expected to eat some more later. We got bored so Stevie, Vicky and I
changed into lighter clothes and went into the backyard. All we did was sit
around, tried not to get dirty and waited for the parade. After a while, we
heard the distant drums coming signaling the start of the parade. We rushed to
our usual corner for parade-watching. This parade was longer than usual. It had
floats fitting the Bicentennial theme, along with fire engines, high school
queens and decorated bicycles. After it was over, we all came home to get ready
to go to our annual 4th of July picnic at the Horvath's house. Before we left,
I turned the TV on. The time was 2:00 P.M. EDT. President Ford rang a bell.
Seconds later, the entire Nation was ringing bells. NY to LA! And in our town
all the church bells chimed. People went onto their porches and rand small
bells of their own. In those two minutes, each representing the two centuries
of our nation's existence, we were truly united. We then went to the picnic. We
didn't stay as long as we did last year because of Paul.
We came home,
watched some of the Bi-C events on TV and then went to the Fenton High School
to see our city's firework display. It wasn't a very good display, but it was
the thought that counted. So many people came to see the fireworks that there
was a large traffic jam when the show was done.
Well, I was
awake at the first stroke of July 5th. I knew it was all over. I don't know how
history will look back on this date, but I think it was a fantastic day.

TUESDAY, JULY 6, 1976

degrees C) Today was a nice day, so Stevie and I rode to A & W and the
pinball arcade. We played around for the rest of the day. Daddy had to work
