My Journals

Well, I've been someone who has kept a journal since 1974, when I was a mere 12 years old. I've decided to make a project of transcribing these old writings and posting them online. There are two main reasons for this. First, I figure it will be a good way to preserve them offsite in case something should happen to the fragile books I originally wrote them in. Second, though quite honestly a secondary concern, I thought perhaps someone might actually be interested in reading them. It's not that I had much of importance to say, but sometimes reading the words of ordinary people can be interesting in its own way. I remember seeing people's journals that were preserved at the Flint Public Library and enjoying reading things about what regular people did and thought about as they went about their lives. And so, should anyone be interested, here are my journals, starting at the beginning: Volume 1, which began on Christmas Day, 1974. I was a 12-year-old living in Fenton, Michigan. I will update the journals as I transcribe them. Probably a month at a time. Enjoy. Or not.

Volume 1: December 25, 1974 - December 24, 1975

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 25, 1974 - MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Wow! Just what I've always wanted! My very own diary. Now, I want to get one thing straight, there's not going to be any of this "dear diary" stuff. Well, I got up at 2:15 a.m. today. I got only 45 minutes of sleep, but who can sleep the night before Christmas? I got Stevie and Vicky up and we slept downstairs on the couch. The air was dry and it was dark so we made sparks with our blankets. I made the biggest. At 8:00 a.m. Mama came down followed by Daddy. We had breakfast and at 9:00 a.m. opened our gifts.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1974
This is what I got yesterday for Christmas. In my stocking (which I opened before breakfast at 8:00 a.m.) was candy, four batteries, this diary and "Woodstock" playing cards. Under the tree I got Treasure Island, a GI Joe foot locker, "Snoopy" pajamas, crossword book, shirt, GI Joe suit, a woodburning kit and a geology set. I got up today at 8:50 a.m. I had breakfast and at 10:00 a.m. vacuumed the house while Mama and Daddy got Vicky a mattress. At 12:20 p.m. my papers came. We left at 12:30 p.m. and came back at 3:15 p.m. One nice lady gave me $1.00.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1974
I got up at 8:25 a.m. today, made my bed and brushed my teeth. Stevie, Vicky and I played "Fingerball". Vicky and I are good at it, but Stevie won most of the games. Mama and Daddy were busy making stuffed cabbage. While it was cooling, we went for a ride. Daddy looked at land because he is thinking about moving (which I hope we do). When we got home... M-M-M-M! Stuffed cabbage! Later, Stevie, Vicky and I made paper bag puppets and played with them upstairs.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1974
I got up at 9:00 a.m. and brushed my teeth. Wow, was it ever a fun day! Daddy took us to some hills across from the high school. We took our sleds and Z-Z-ZOOM! Daddy had kept it secret from Stevie, Vicky and I. We went back after a few hours, ate, rested, then went back to the hill. This time, Mama came along. She didn't ride a sled because she had an excuse: she's having a baby. If it's a girl, it'll be called (YECCHH!) Paula (how cheap)! If a boy, it'll be called Paul (that's better). Our cousins are coming Monday and we're goin' to the hill!

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1974
I got up at 8:30a.m. today, made my bed and brushed my teeth. We went to church, came home and ate a big breakfast. Nothing really good happened today. Mama and Daddy decided if the baby is a girl, they will name it Eve. It rained for a while and the snow started to melt. I don’t know if it will be good for sledding tomorrow. I hope it snows! I’m looking forward to Mickey and Mike coming over!

MONDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1974
I got up at 8:10 a.m. today, made my bed and brushed my teeth. Boy, am I ever excited! Uncle Ronny, Aunt Diane and Mickey and Mike came over today. We opened our presents from them. I got a book called “Wonders of Nature” and Stevie got a woodburning set just like mine! We went to the hill and found a new trail. When we were done we went to the Dairy Queen. When they left, the Forro’s came over. It was a great day!!!

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1974
I got up at 10:00 a.m. today, made my bed and brushed my teeth. I’m sorry I’m not writing too well, but that’s because I’m smashed. I didn’t sip my New Year’s champagne, I gulped it in one swallow. Larry, Linda and Kimmy are coming over tomorrow. I feel weird! Please see “Reflections of ‘74” then see Jan. 1, 1975. ’74 is history!

REFLECTIONS ON ‘74
Some newsmen sit in front of the TV cameras saying “1974 was a great year”. But let’s face it, they’ll do anything as long as they get paid. To tell you the truth, it was rotten, man! Urban renewal was voted in, the new culvert bridge was put in and our vacation was short. Yes, I know people want others to look on the bright side, but what bright side? I have the feeling 1975 will be a great year.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 1, 1975
HAPPY 1975! I got up at 10:00 a.m. today, made my bed and brushed my teeth. I felt a lot better. I then waited for Larry, Linda and Kimmy to come over. We had fun today. We got out all the cards and made a great big house out of them. We had a delicious dinner with stuffing and pork chops. Larry and the rest came over a little after 10:00 a.m. and left at 8:00 p.m. It’ll be a great new year and I’m gonna love it!

THURSDAY, JANUARY 2, 1975
I got up at 9:00 a.m. today. We watched TV then went to Pat’s house. We later delivered our papers without any trouble. We got home at 3:45 p.m. Our Christmas decorations were taken down while we were gone. We finished up the last of our stuffed cabbage today. It was good! Daddy went to work today. His vacation is over. He’s survived the layoffs so far! He works at AC Spark Plugs.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 3, 1975
I got up at 8:00 a.m. today. I watched TV and the shoveled the sidewalk. Later, I went to Johnny’s Store and got some ravioli. Earlier, I had taken a bath. Stevie went to Francie’s all day. I played with Steve [Younce] and Chris [Korsmo]. Daddy came home and Mama went shopping. It was a good day.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 4, 1975
I got up at 9:45 a.m., made my bed and brushed my teeth. Stevie and I shoveled the snow. I did Elsie’s sidewalk and she gave me a quarter. I went to the library and got some books. Then I got my cousin Mike a birthday card. I stayed up and watched “Weekend”. It comes on at 11:30 a.m. and lasts until 1:00 a.m. It’s new, it’s good but it’s on too late. All the good shows are on too early or too late and when you’re up, there’s garbage. That should be changed.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 5, 1975
I got up at 8:40 a.m. today. I went to church, came home, had a big breakfast and worried. This is what I was worried about: SCHOOL! Daddy brought the record player downstairs. Stevie and I vacuumed and dusted. It probably would have been a good day if I didn’t think about school. That’s one more Christmas vacation gone. You blew it, kid! Tomorrow’s D-day! SURVIVE!

MONDAY, JANUARY 6, 1975
I got up at 7:10 a.m. today, woke up Mama, went downstairs and watched the “Today” show. I had breakfast and left for school. School wasn’t so bad for me today. It was the normal ho-hum routine. All day I look forward to two things during school: social studies and lunch period. I like lunch period because I eat my lunch in class when the teacher isn’t looking then I go to the library, and I like social studies because of Mr. Pruitt.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 7, 1975
I got up at 7:10 a.m. today, went downstairs and watched the “Today” show. It was a normal day at school today. I came home and played with Daisy, our dog. She’s a miniature dachshund. At 7:30 p.m., Daddy held a Millpond meeting in our house. Jimmy and Kenny came over while it was going on and we played upstairs. It was a good day.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1975
I got up at 7:10 a.m. today, went downstairs and watched the “Today” show. School was easy today. In science, we’re learning the metric system. In social studies (which I love) we’re studying for a test. In math, I looked out the window and (YAAAH!)…  RAIN! When we delivered our papers they were sopped! We came home and ate. We then watched “Little House on the Prairie” and ate a snack. All in all, it was a good to average day.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 1975
I got up at 7:10 a.m. today, went downstairs and watched the “Today” show. It was a good day at school today. When I got home I went upstairs to read. My favorite book is called “Follow My Leader”. It’s about a boy that goes blind in an accident and gets a guide dog. I read and know so much about blindness that if I go blind I’d be able to handle it. It was a good day.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 10, 1975
I got up at 7:10 a.m. today, went downstairs and watched the “Today” show. The Today show is welcome in my morning. It keeps me well-informed on world events. School was good today. We had a test in social studies. I think I’ll get an “A”. Mama went shopping today. When she came back, I fed Daisy. I love Daisy and Daisy loves me. I saw a show called “Stowaway to the Moon”. It was good and so was the day.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 11, 1975
I got up in the middle of the night and it was weird. The wind was blowing at 60 miles per hour. I went back to sleep and got up again at 8:45 a.m. Daddy took Stevie and me to Judy’s Barber Shop for a haircut. When we got home, I helped Daddy pick up the branches blown down by the wind. There was one mystery… how did an orange get in our backyard? Later, we went to Elmer and Vivian Nagy’s for dinner. It was good and so was the day.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 12, 1975
I got up at 8:30 a.m. today. I went to my REP (Religious Education Program) classes. Mr. Sieradski is my teacher. Tomorrow is school. I walked home from REP and had a big breakfast. MONDAY, JANUARY 13, 1975
I got up at 7:10 a.m. today, went downstairs and watched the “Today” show. School was very good today. I went home and asked if I could go to the school library. She said yes. I went back and talked with Mrs. Brooks the librarian. I really like her. We talked about everything. A to Z, alpha to omega. You name it, we discussed it. Mrs. Brooks drove me home around 4:00 a.m. It was a supersonic day!

TUESDAY, JANUARY 14, 1975
I got up at 7:10 a.m. today, went downstairs and watched the “Today” show. School was good as usual today. I stayed at the library again today. I got my confirmation watch fixed yesterday. I got up at 7:10 a.m. today, went downstairs and watched the “Today” show. School was good today as it always has been. When I got home, I cut my fingernails. My papers arrived and I delivered a few before Stevie got home. I deliver 230 papers and get $4.60 (2 cents a paper). When Stevie and I got home we were happy! We got home at 5:55 p.m., shattering our old record of 6:16 p.m. It was a great day.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 1975
I got up at 7:10 a.m. today, went downstairs and watched the “Today” show. School was good today. When I got home, I took Mama’s letter to the mailbox. We also had a very good dinner. I practiced on my accordion for about two hours. I learned “Danube Waves” without anyone helping me! Today was a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious day.

I got up at 6:30 a.m. today, went downstairs and watched the “Today” show. School was good today. I heard that Rick’s tests showed no signs of kidney problems. He was just very sick. He didn’t come to school today, although he got out of the hospital yesterday. They tore down two houses on our street. It looked strange with them gone. Stevie and Vicky went to REP today. It was a good day. 9 days left!

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1975

We all played upstairs trying to pass the time away until Christmas. Well, it was a good day. 2 DAYS LEFT!

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1975 – CHRISTMAS EVE!
I got up at 8:00 a.m. today, went downstairs and watched TV. We were anxious because of Christmas being only one day away. We went to confession at about 11:00 a.m. There were a lot of people there. We got done with our papers at 5:03 p.m.! A new record! We got $4.00 and two “Snickers” bars on our route. We had some hot chocolate and then went to mass at 8:00 a.m. There were many, many people there. We had some tea and went to bed. Of course it was a good day. It’s hard to say goodbye. May this record live forever! BYE! 1 DAY LEFT!
